Mark 1:14-19. - So, why did Jesus choose fishermen?
(The four subheadings below are from a message preached by Mr Roy Kruse at the BGEA ISOE in Durban South Africa in November 04. Used with permission.)
Passion - They were passionate about fishing. Fishing was their lifestyle. They were committed to their task of fishing. They were totally committed to Christ Jesus and to the task of fishing for men. Are we passionate and committed to preaching the good news to all people as the disciples were?
Priority - Their priority was catching fish. They may have had other tasks to do but they lived to catch fish. They went where the fish were because they wanted to catch fish. What is our priority today? Is it catching people for Christ?
Perseverance - They kept on fishing even though they did not catch anything. Even if they caught nothing, or when the storms came, they remained faithful to their task of fishing. Do we persevere today in what we do in reaching people?
Partnership (Luke 5) - They were individuals in their own right, but they were also willing to work in partnership with others. They were willing to work together for the better of the whole group and a much bigger objective. More importantly they were willing to work for the glory, and honour of their Master, who had called them to fish for men. Today we must work in partnership with other people, local churches and ministries in order for us to have a greater impact in our world.
Jesus Christ picked and called ordinary people to follow Him first, and it is He who makes them fishers of men. If you are willing to say yes to the LORD, He will make you a fisher of men too.
